Biography
Prof. Andrew Livex Okwi is an Honorary Professor in the Department of Pathology at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, with a specialisation in Molecular Pathology. His research interests include collaborative programmes for the introduction of sickle cell disease screening at health centres across Uganda, as well as the genetic and viral factors that influence cell cycle regulation and apoptosis in tumours. He serves as Principal Investigator at Makerere University on several EU-funded grants focused on capacity building, including the training of Masters and PhD students across partnering African institutions. Prof. Okwi is also active in innovation: he is currently unlocking the potential of bioactive compounds found in the roots of certain foodstuffs and developing enriched dietary products for the management of painful crises in sickle cell disease patients in Uganda.
