About the Institution

Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (UCAD) is one of West Africa's oldest, largest, and most prestigious public universities, located in Dakar, Senegal. Its origins trace back to the African School of Medicine established in 1918 and the French Institute of Black Africa (IFAN) created in 1936, both of which laid the foundation for higher education in the region. The institution was formally founded as the University of Dakar in 1957 and later renamed in 1987 to honor the renowned historian and scientist Cheikh Anta Diop. Today, UCAD is a comprehensive university hosting six major faculties, numerous schools and institutes, and a student population exceeding several tens of thousands, including learners from across Africa and Europe. The university is also a leading research hub in West Africa, with robust research infrastructures — including IFAN — and extensive laboratory networks across disciplines such as health, environmental sciences, and technology. UCAD maintains active membership in international academic bodies like the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie and the Association of African Universities, reaffirming its global academic engagement.

Our Mission

Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD) is committed to advancing academic excellence, fostering regional and international collaboration, and serving as a hub for knowledge and innovation in West Africa. As part of its strategic vision, UCAD actively promotes academic mobility, strengthening cooperation with partner institutions and supporting internationalization of training and research programs. Recent initiatives emphasize the university's role in facilitating cross-border academic exchanges, enhancing the mobility of students and faculty, and building an integrated academic space across Africa and beyond.

Facilities & Resources

The Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Odonto‑Stomatology (FMPOS) at Cheikh Anta Diop University hosts a wide network of research laboratories, with a total of 57 laboratories dedicated to teaching, clinical training, and advanced research. The Department of Medical Biology and Functional Explorations maintains specialized laboratories in clinical biochemistry, haematology, parasitology, microbiology, and functional diagnostics. Laboratories in Biological and Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences include units in physiology, immunology, human genetics, bacteriology–virology, and pharmacology.

UCAD provides students with robust digital learning infrastructure, including platforms for distance education, online course resources, and digital pedagogical tools. Students also benefit from well-equipped laboratories and specialized training centres at institutions such as the École Supérieure Polytechnique (ESP) and ENSETP.

The Central University Library (BUCAD) offers access to over 250,000 volumes and operates a comprehensive digital library containing theses, dissertations, rare works, and publications by UCAD researchers, accessible through advanced search tools.
